WE'RE READY TO CRACK THE WHIP - MCE TELLS RESIDENTS OF ASHONGMAN PURE WATER AHEAD OF PLANS TO ADDRESS PERENNIAL FLOODING IN THE AREA
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), for Ga East Municipal Assembly (GEMA), Hon. Janet Tulasi Mensah, has sent strong warning to residents of Ashongman Pure Water and all flood-prone areas in the municipality of the Assembly's resolve to demolish buildings found to be in waterways as it plans to address the perennial flooding in the municipality. She was addressing a section of residents at Pure Water.
The Hon. MCE, on the early hours of Thursday, met with some residents of Ashongman Pure Water with members of the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC), including the Greater Accra NADMO Director, Hon. Archibold Cobbina, Madina Fire Officer, DO1 Dora Kwafo, and four (4) Soldiers of the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces, as well as the Municipal Coordinating Director (MCD), Mr. Joshua Adams Asihene, Municipal Works Engineer (MWE), Peter Bah-Lano, Municipal Urban Roads Engineer, Aboagye Foster and Public Relations Officer (PRO), Okunyin Boaz Orlan-Hackman, also present.
The Hon. MCE and her entourage engaged the residents in a discussion on how possible best the Assembly, together with the residents, could fashion out a strategy, to address the debilitating perennial flooding in the area.
At the meeting, which was not the first but about the fourth time since the assumption of office of the Hon. MCE, gave the residents yet another opportunity to opine on the situation and proffer solution on the way forward.
A consensus was reached that the Assembly should carry through its intentions to deal with the situation with the residents pledging their unalloyed support and cooperation.
The Hon MCE indicated that it was to ensure proper governance and enhancement of democracy that the Assembly had to continue to engage the community members until a fitting solution was found to their challenges.
She then led the team to the field to assess the impact of the recent rains which had left in its trail, huge galleys on supposed roads in the area and displaced some residents as their houses have nearly been submerged.
The Hon. MCE and her entourage observed critically at one of the areas they trekked, New Ashongman, that a supposed regular channel for the flow of water from upstream had been diverted at the convenience of some few residents causing serious flooding, damaging properties and rendering many homeless.
Speaking to the residents at the end of the inspection tour, Hon. Janet Tulasi Mensah said the Assembly was determined to clamp down on haphazard development in the area and tasked the MUSEC to immediately submit a report on their planned action towards addressing the flooding situation.
"Your worries are the Assembly's worries, so we came here as early as 4 am to inspect and assess the whole place and I think the right thing should be done and the technical people are taking over and we expect you to cooperate with them to find a lasting solution", she told the people.
She appealed to the residents to seek for the necessary permits before embarking on any development project to avoid the situation where their life-time investments in their properties would be pulled down.
"Whenever you are making any form of development, please seek advice from the Assembly, the technical people are there to help you. The team coming in to channel the course of the water, we are not against anybody, it's just that we want to live In peace and in our comforts. We spend so much to build so we have to enjoy our homes", the Hon. MCE urged.
A representative of the Pure Water Residents' Association, Mr. Tsatsu Kudiabor, expressed great delight at the visit of the Hon. MCE and her team and stated that the people were in full support and will cooperate totally with the authorities to fix their flooding issue.
"On behalf of the Association, we are also very grateful that you have taken the pain to come and see what we go through daily when the rainy season sets in. We are happy you are here again especially Hon MCE. We are grateful for all you have been doing since you came in as the mother of the community. We are giving you all our support. We are pushing in all our effort, if there is even the need that we the individual members would contribute something little towards servicing of your machines and or maybe getting sand or whatever we can do to help the Assembly, we will push for it because the good of the community is the good of all of us, and our children will grow and be happy that we, their parents, have done something good for them", Mr. Kudiabor stated.
