The National Disaster Management Organization ( NADMO) is calling on all to take precaution measures to avoid flooding this year and to even mitigate it impact in case it occurs.
Speaking to J24NEWS GH,The Greater Accra Regional NADMO Director in charge of flood Evans Anakwah, disclosed that, in Ghana Natural disasters are only about 20% whiles about 80% disasters are (Man made) caused by human activities.
This often compounded by poor waste management practices whereby people dump refuse into drains anytime anywhere which leads to drains being blocked and resist free flow of water when it rains.
He added that, the haphazard construction of houses especially on waterways is another factor which must be noted.
According to him, those who lives in 'flood prone' areas in the Greater Accra Region must take the precaution very serious, the area includes Glefe,Shiabu, Gbegbese in the Dansoman area, Dome Railway Crossing, Taifa Bankyease, Graphic Road, Obetsebi Lamptey Roundabout, CMB Flat North Kaneshie, Nungua A- life, Kokrobite,Tema Community 5 and Newtown.
More importantly, he said NADMO is feverishly preparing adequately to respond to any flood when the rains come, some of the measures put in place includes liaising with all the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs ) to dredge every drain before it rains, however due to the climate change one can not easily predict the weather hence preparation and awareness creation is key,he added.
That notwithstanding, 'Pre- Position-Positions' is also another measure put in place to help solve the challenge, that is NADMO officers in all MMDAs have been extended to zonal offices to help get first hand information.
He concluded by calling on the Assemblies to strengthening the Disaster Volunteer Groups (DVG)in order to be more effective since they are very close to the people and live in same community.
